The SLR McLaren super sports car will be marketed by Mercedes-Benz in the form of a roadster with a top and it will be made of carbon fibre, a material that will provide the vehicle with a high level of safety together with extreme torsional stiffness at the same outstanding level as the coupe version. The new high-performance sports car features a top speed of 322 km/h, being powered by an AMG V8 compressor engine which produces 460 kW/626 HP, while the fully retractable top gives the Roadster an undiluted open-air driving pleasure and outstanding comfort. The new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster is aimed to unite the legend of the successful SLR racing models from the 1950s with the innovative technology used by modern Formula 1 vehicles from the Vodafone-McLaren-Mercedes team. The visual link with the racing cars is established by typical stylistic elements, such as the Formula 1 Silver Arrow. The many years of experience of Mercedes-Benz and its Formula 1 partner McLaren, were the basis of the new Roadster, beginning the body made entirely of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic materials, which place the vehicle as an exception among high-performance sports cars. This technology resulted in an exemplary energy absorption and high occupant safety, also leading to great ride characteristics. The fully retractable top is an important attribute of the Roadster, beautifully blending into the flowing lines of the SLR McLaren. The roof is made of a newly developed material, available in three different colours, guaranteeing complete suitability for everyday use. It opens and closes semi-automatically in less than ten seconds, thus ensuring pleasure and comfort. The Roadster make suse of an aerodynamic concept that incorporates an airbrake into the access lid, giving increased downforce on the rear axle. the unique carbon-fibre crash elements ensure a high degree of safety, completed by adaptive airbags, knee and side airbags as well as seat belt tensioners and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.
