We had the opportunity to see a concept version of the Ford Fiesta ST last year, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Now, a year later, we were told by the carmaker that the concept will be turned into a production version and will be sold on the North American and Canadian market. Actually, the model will be built as a five-door hatchback unlike the model introduced at the Geneva Motor Show for the European customers that had a three-door body style.
Under the hood, the new Fiesta ST developed for the Americans hides the same 1.6-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine capable of developing 197 horsepower and 214 lb. ft. of torque. The European version can only produce 178 horsepower and 177 lb. ft. of torque. To transfer the output to the front wheels, the American engineers have provided a 6-speed manual transmission. This is actually capable of offering a fuel economy of up to 34 mpg. It is not for sure, but this might be the for the highway driving. The engine is not the only great feature the new 2013 Ford Fiesta ST has. The specialists have also provided a sport-tuned suspension that lowers the car by 15 mm. In fact, this works with an electronic Torque Vectoring Control, but also receives help from a more potent braking system. To improve handling the model also gets a quicker steering ratio of 13.6:1.
In terms of appearance, the new Fiesta ST will receive an aero kit that includes special grille and bumpers, side skirts and a rear diffuser. To transfer the output to the road, the engineers have provided 17-inch wheels. On the inside we will find sport seats, pedals and steering wheel. We will know more once the Los Angeles Auto Show begins, so until then, please be patient.
