Freightliner Cascadia Pikes Peak Special

These last few days all types of powered vehicles have been attacking the pikes International Hill climb. All drivers are looking for a new record as they climb the 12.42-mile road course to its finish at 14.110-feet elevation. We had the opportunity to see plenty of visual satisfaction and in one of these days we had the opportunity to see Mike Ryan and his Freighliner Cascadia Pikes Peak Special. For example, last year, the professional stunt driver campaigned a Freighliner and managed to set his 7th record. He managed to climb in 12 minutes and 38 seconds. We met him last week at Irwindale Speedway in Southern California last week while he was putting his latest creation through shakedown testing for the event of this week.

The Freighliner is a purpose-built machine that comes with specially made aluminum-rail frame and carbon-fiber and fiberglass body panels. Despite the light materials used, the car weighs 10.200 pounds wet. Under the hood it hides a turbocharged 14.0-liter inline0six Detroit Series 60 marine diesel capable of generating 825 horsepower in stock form. The engineers from Gale Banks Engineering have fitted it with an 8.3-liter supercharger in addition to a 110-mm turbocharger. The same specialists have added a methanol injection system to improve combustion and an intercooler spray system to reduce the intake temperatures. The modified engine is now capable of generating 2.400 horsepower and 5.000 lb. ft. of torque.

To transfer the output to the wheels, the engineers have offered a five-speed racing automatic unit that works together with a limited-slip. The steering rack is from Howe Performance, designed for a Baja Trophy Truck and the tires are specialty made from sticky racing rubber molded by Michelin to look like stock truck tires. The team will attack the mountains this week and we will know more on the capabilities of the car next week.
