Recently, Renault finished developing the new Clio RS and Peugeot just finished with the 208 GTi. Both model receive power from a 1.6-liter turbocharged four capable of developing 197 horsepower. Volkswagen is right on their tails with the new Polo E WRC Street Concept which was previewed for the first time at the Worthersee Tour in Australia in the spring. Back then, the specialists have confirmed the launch of a production version of the model for next year. The specialists say the new vehicle, the Volkswagen Polo R will be capable of developing more than the two mentioned above, reaching 217 horsepower.
Now, things are a bit different. R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg through the Autocar magazine declared that the new model will be revealed to the public to the first time in March 2013, at the Geneva Motor Show. It is actually a very close date and fans and enthusiasts do not have to wait a lot anymore. At first, the carmaker did not plan to build the new Polo R, but after some time, they have decided to start the manufacturing process. Why? Their thoughts were to support and promote the entrance of the Volkswagen Polo in the World Rally Championship starting with next year.
Under the hood, the engineers have offered a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine which also powers the current VW Golf GTI Mk6 and a lot of other models as well. This unit is capable of generating up to 217 horsepower. This actually means 10 horsepower more in comparison with the compact hatchback. The package offered by the carmaker will also include an improved chassis that will feature a mechanical limited-slip differential, but also some new aero and styling parts, to be sure the results will worth spread.
