Lada Niva Urban

The Lada Niva or VAZ-2121 is an off-road vehicle produced by the Russian manufacturer AvtoVAZ. It was also marketed as the Lada Sport in Iceland, Lada Taiga in Austria, Bognor Diva in Uruguay, and it is offered since 2009 on most markets as the Lada 4x4. It was one of the first mass production off-road vehicles to feature a unibody architecture, independent front suspension and coil suspension and it is a predecessor to current crossover SUVs which nearly all follow this format. Well, here we are now, facing a Lada Niva Urban version of the car.

The Lada Niva Urban features a restyled front fascia that includes an updated radiator grille featuring three slats, as well as body-colored plastic bumpers and a curved rear wiper. The vehicle rides on a set of 17-inch wheels which get hubcaps. On the inside there's more sound-deadening material, power windows and air conditioning and these, you’ve got to admit, offer a refreshing air to the car.

The Lada Niva Urban is powered by a 4-cylinder, 1.7-liter engine that develops 81 bhp (60 kW) at 5,000 rpm delivered to both axles via a 5-speed manual gearbox featuring a creeper gear and three differentials (front, center, rear). The 1,210 kg off-roader reaches 62 mph (100 km/h) in 22 seconds before getting to a maximum speed of 85 mph (137 km/h). The vehicle will have its official debut at the Moscow Auto Show in August. Till then reflect if this urban SUV can be considered really urban or if it remains just a SUV more suitable for off-road terrains.
