New reports from Japan confirms Toyota is working on a new low cost sports auto expected to go on sale soon and priced around two million yen (US$16,780). Toyota will produce the model with help from Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru’s parent brand), who will be providing one of its trademark boxer engines, reports the newspaper Asahi.

Toyota bought 8.7% in Fuji back in 2005 and has since then have been dealing with small vehicles built by its Daihatsu subsidiary. Fuji’s returning the favor supplying with a 2.0L horizontally opposed engine, which has low cost, lower center of gravity and smoothness.

The size is expected to be under 4m in length and 1.7m across. Final output will be around 120hp in a body that’ll tip the scales at just 1,000kg. It will be a spiritual successor to the AE86 (photo above), from the anime series Initial D. Toyota group has no pure sports car so this would be a great entry level model to make the brand more interesting.
