Daimler plans to become one of the leading turbochargers supplier in Europe

Daimler plans to become one of the leading turbochargers supplier in Europe. Daimler at the moment sources around 50% of its own turbochargers from the IHI Charging Systems International (Japan) — a Daimler – Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries alliance.

"Not long from now, we will be Europe's third-largest turbocharger supplier," Leopold Mikulic, the head of passenger-car engines / powertrains - Daimler subsidiary Mercedes-Benz Cars, said to Automotive News Europe.

"Our dependence on the turbocharger suppliers was huge. We decided to invest in our own operation to have competition in the marketplace," said Thomas Weber, board member for r&d at Daimler.

"Downsizing and turbocharging in combination with direct-injection and stratified-charge combustion systems is the way to the future for the gasoline engine" affirmed Mikulic.
