Further details about Audi R8 V12 TDI

The new model from Audi, Audi R8 V12 TDI, will be presented next week at the auto show in Detroit-until then, here are some details about this remarkable car that are worth mentioning. The diesel mill’s 500hp should drop four tenths of a second off the 0-100km/h time to bring it down to 4.2 seconds. Fuel consumption will be brought down from the petrol model’s 14.6L/100km to just 10.0L/100km. For the non-metric enabled, that is an improvement of nearly 8mpg, from 16mpg to 23.5mpg.

The V12 power plant Audi has shoehorned into the R8 will produce 500bhp and 1000Nm of torque. Compared to the already very respectable 420hp provided by the petrol motor in the standard R8, the new motor - sourced from the Q7 - is even more powerful. By putting a R8 under the V12 TDI motor instead of the rather gargantuan Q7, Audi should be able to seek something like 28mpg out of the combination.

The diesel motor in Audi’s R10 LeMans race car revolutionized the race by using less fuel and providing more than adequate power. It is just leaked onto the web that Audi could be bringing a V12 turbo diesel R8 to Detroit this month. The car is labeled as a concept, but rumors say that production is already planned. Given the leaks and new-car debuts so far, diesels may be the new star in Detroit.
