Searching for alternatives for the Dakar rally

Due to the cancellation of this year's Dakar rally, the organizers have now to come up with a solution or at least, for the beginning, with some alternatives to permanently move the race into another landscape, other than northern Africa. This year's rally was the first one to be canceled in the entire rally's history- however, even last year several stages were canceled due to security reasons. Having received real threats from Al Qaeda to the Dakar rally itself, the French foreign ministry urged to cancel the competition, which means that last year's race has been the last to take place into the traditional spot of Dakar route.

The organizers of the event (ASO) together with the very-famous Tour de France bicycle race have taken into consideration several alternatives, which include locations such as Australia and Dubai (one hypothesis was even to run the distance from Paris to Beijing!. However, lately, there are rumors that following a proposal from the Chilean tourism minister, a deal was already established and which means that the rally will most probably run on a route from Argentina to Chile and back. Even though the rally won't take place any more this year, when it will be back on the map again, for sure it will revert to the Dakar's traditional January 1st as the starting point.
