Toyota versus GM in the title for the worlds biggets automaker in 2007

In the last few months, there has been a lot of rumors and disputes over the title of world’s most biggest automaker for the year of 2007 and the final battle seems to be between General Motors (which claim sales of 9,369,524 vehicles) and Toyota (claiming a general 3.366 million units sold worldwide in 2007). However, it seems that the mathematics used by GM to calculate this sum is not that fair after all.

Sources like “Automotive News” discovered that in this total of 9,370 million units, GM included also the sales of the Wuling brand (with sales of over 510,000 vehicles in total) even though it owns just 34% of the Chinese automaker. On the other side, there exists a stipulation that says that the sales of a company are to include just the ones of the companies where the brand holds shares of over 50%- the same stipulation prevents Ford from claiming the sales of Mazda where it owns a 33.4% stake. In addition, if we do a simple mathematics calculation, by substracting the sales of Wuling, GM remains with a total of 8,885,599 units sales which makes it the second on the list after Toyota. It this would be the case, it will be the first time after 76 years when GM is not to be claimed the world’s biggest automaker. However, we still have to wait for the final comments from Toyota-the official global sales will be announced sometimes next month.
