Ford to equip compact 2009 SUVs two other units with six-speed transmission

Ford previewed the next six-speed automatic transmission during the 2008 Auto Show in New York and released on Wednesday more info about the model. The first applications of the brand new gearbox will be on the Ford Escape 2009 and Mercury Mariner plus the new transmission that promise to boost performance, decreasing emissions and fuel consumption.

Codenamed 6F35, this new transmission is intended for the front-wheel drive applications. Ford says the new six-speed model will increase fuel mileage with 4 to 6 percent — if compared to conventional 4 and 5-speed gearboxes — also improves the acceleration.

“With a greater gear span, the 6F35 allows the engine to operate at more optimum combinations of speed and load to meet certain driving conditions,” said Craig Renneker, the chief engineer for new automatic transmissions, at Ford Powertrain Operations. “The new transmission also enables the engine to run at lower speeds on the highway, which aids fuel economy.”

The Mazda Tribute 2009 – a sister car to the Escape and Mariner — will use also the 6F35 transmission.

In the press release, Ford said also that "two other vehicles will use the transmission early next year", implying presumably the Mercury Milan and Ford Fusion .
