Toyota Prius to be made in America

Automotive News says Toyota is in discussions with General Motors about the production of the hybrid Prius at their joint venture in California. So, if the two firms will reach an agreement would be a premiere for the Prius — the first mass-made gasoline-electric hybrid auto in the world — is produced in the United States.

Toyota may now produce Prius autos at NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing Inc.), a venture that's established by the two groups on 1984 that presently makes Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix, Toyota Tacoma and Pontiac Vibe cars, it said.

The Japanese firm plans to ship key components right from Japan, assembling them at the venture on Fremont, Calif., where the demand for the environmentally friendly autos is high, the newspaper affirmed.

Toyota aims on selling at least 1 million hybrid autos a year from the beginning of the 2010s. It currently makes the Prius in China and China.
