Production name for 2010 Pontiac G8 ST was chosen

After 18,000 persons wrote to General Motors during the `Tame the Name` promotion, finally GM has chosen a name for the Pontiac G8 ST unit, so the winner is...G8 ST. General Motors decided on scraping all the entrants ideas, sticking with that initial decision, having ST standing for the ’Sport Truck’. "’G8 ST’ was one of the most popular suggestions, plus we noticed a far broader trend toward simple, easy-to-remember names," said Craig Bierley, General Motors’ BPG product director of marketing for autos and crossovers.

General Motors toyed even with the idea to name it after the popular El Camino. “We actually thought very long about El Camino,” affirmed Bierley. “In the end, we felt it was more appropriate to honor the El Camino’s unique place as part of Chevy’s heritage and not use that nameplate on a Pontiac.”

The G8 ST will be filling a niche that General Motors hopes U.S. clients will embrace: truck that looks, handles and drives like a sports sedan model. Pontiac is sticking with the V-8 361 hp as the only engine, plus is sending the G8 ST auto from 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds. It's good for a truck that offers a 73.9-in. cargo bed having 42.7 cu ft - cargo space. So the tradeoff is G8 ST’s small payload 1000 pound and towing capacity - 3500 lb. That is not Silverado territory exactly, but neither is Silverado besides the hybrid coming close to the G8 V-8 sedan’s 15/24 mpg city/highway estimated.
