The extra-cheap Tata Nano city auto was slated on starting production on October, but some violent protests have place the production date in danger. The protests raised after Tata made a 350 million Dollars factory on the site of a fertile farmland.
Rumblings started this year when the Supreme Court in India requested reply from Tata and West Bengal government as why ‘fertile multi-crop agricultural land’ is being used now for the production Nano plant. Despite this, the construction continued and farmers were then displaced from the lands.
The increased violence concerns Tata, and the Indian carmakeris thinking of totally abandoning that site.
“What has concerned us is the violence, the disruptions, that has led us to be concerned about the safety of our employees, our equipment and investment, and of the viability of the process,” Chairman Ratan Tata reported to Automotive News. “If anybody is under the impression that because we have made this very large investment of 1,500 crore rupees ($350 million), that we would not move, then they are wrong, because we would move to protect our people.”
Tata has no other Plan... B, meaning other carmakers could beat up Tata to $2,500 auto punch if these protests continue. Comment this news on the forum!
