Hyundai starts production of the in-house made 6-speed automatic transmission

Following on the Toyota footsteps plus a joint-venture featuring Ford and GM, Hyundai completed the work on the brand new in-house made 6-speed auto transmission. The all-new gearbox unit will be used in cars with powerplants, transversely-mounted.

Hyundai began the new transmission development 4 years ago having in mind reduced emissions. As result, this new model is more efficient with over 12 percent than the outgoing 5-speed auto from Hyundai, improving its performance.

This new 6-cog vehicle is over 26 pounds lighter using 62 fewer pieces. “The strength of our design is its completely unique layout, which makes it smaller, more compact and lighter than any other six-speed on the market today,” said Hong-Min Kim, project manager of transaxle - Hyundai R&D Center. Sixteen Hyundai cars are earmarked now for the new 2010 transmission, including the brand new Santa Fe.
