Chrysler axes 1 shift at the minivan plant in Windsor

Automobile job cuts in industry have become sadly a daily occurrence almost, with Chrysler struggling it announcing now more layoffs (blue-collar). Amid non-stop slumping sales, Chrysler cuts 1,200 workers from its production facility in Windsor, Ontario.

Chrysler this week earlier announced that the 1,200 jobs cut and 1 shift – leaving only 2 – at its Windsor factory. Chrysler Windsor plant makes the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivan units and the VW-badged Routan model. Windsor has been hit hard by the auto downturn, having the city with a 10.9 % rate of unemployment – the highest in every important city from this country, The Star reported. GM will be closing its transmission plant in Windsor next year.

The 2 shifts move from 3 will wipe likely about 90,000 minivan units off the production schedule / year at Chrysler. 'It is another huge blow to the city of Windsor' Ken Lewenza, the national president in the Canadian Auto Workers, said The Star. 'This is nothing but devastating'.
