Toyota confirms the all-new hybrid unit taking on Honda's Insight

Following a few reports surfaced at the beginning of this month, Toyota confirmed it's readying a brand new hybrid unit to take on the Insight by Honda. The all-new hybrid unit will have its inspiration from the Yaris auto plus slot under the Prius on amenities and price.

The Prius model was the ex king of the area involving the entry-level hybrids, but Honda stolen the crown presenting the new Insight. The 3rd-gen Prius – that should start rolling into showrooms for Toyota in only a few weeks from now – is bigger in every dimension when it's compared to the present auto – including the cost. Toyota hopes this new car will address all the concerns. 'We are developing a low-priced hybrid vehicle like Honda’s Insight' Akihiko Otsuka, the chief engineer of redesigned, 3rd-generation Toyota Prius, said to Automotive News. 'We are going to compete by expanding our hybrid-vehicle lineup to smaller hybrids, in the class of the Vitz and Yaris'.

Otsuka didn't give a time-frame for its new unit but Nikkei - Japan’s newspaper suggests the all-new vehicle could be on marketed in 2011. It's unclear which body type the company will be using for the brand new auto – the Yaris is now available in both sedan and hatch variant – but it appears that more than 1 version will be getting the green light. So, a Prius-inspired 4-door seems it's a sure thing but, now with Honda preparing a hybrid variant of the Fit hatchback, a 5-door hatch unit could be in the cards also.
