Toyota is cutting Prius cost to compete better with Insight

As you know, Toyota will announce a cost cut for its brand new Prius hybrid unit, allowing a better competition with that low-priced Insight by Honda. According to some source inside Toyota's U.S. operations, the Prius 2010 will retail up for 21,000 Dollars - a complete 1,000 Dollars lower than that outgoing unit despite all the increased content and efficiency.

Toyota's expected to announce tomorrow officially the pricing, says Bloomberg. The Prius still will cost more than Insight, that begins at 19,800 Dollars, but the Prius has more standard options and offers higher efficiency of fuel also- 50 mpg mixed, versus the 41 mpg for Honda.

Toyota hasn't confirmed if it will be cutting the cost of its existing Prius, that will be continuing to be sold there, in Japan. So, the Japanese carmaker is expected still to introduce a Prius variant (low-price) in the future. Mmm we'll wait for it...
