Detroit offers a zone with special tax for General Motors headquarters

Wanting to prevent GM from moving on to another community - suburban, Detroit officials and Wayne County, Michigan, affirm they are willing to designate the Renaissance Center automaker headquarters a tax-incentive area would reduce dramatically the carmaker’s business cost.

'We’d lose much more than that if they would leave' Mayor Bing said to the reporters. 'If they were to move out, we would have to offer tax incentives for a new company to move in' Ficano continued. Bing was not so kind when the reporters asked what he really thought about the attempt of Fouts to lure General Motors to Warren, place of its most important engineering campus. 'Back off' Bing said when he was asked what he personally would say to Fouts.

'For him to do what he is doing right now is asinine' Bing told all those reporters. 'We don’t need to do that and … he didn’t talk to any of us … nor has he talked to anyone from GM'. Ficano stated the decision of using the county’s ultimate Renaissance Zone designation at Renaissance Center was for sending 'a strong message to the world that Mayor Bing and I are committed to creating the most business friendly climate in the world this region has ever seen'.
