Production of three-door Audi A1 to start in October

Alfons Dintner, the head of the Audi factory in Brussels, said in a recent interview for the Belgian daily newspaper Le Soir that the plant will begin series production of the new Audi A1 in October this year. Mister Dinter said that Audi will close the factory in August for a period of five weeks to make all the necessary preparations in order to start the production of the A1 model which will start being exposed to clients view in Audi’s European showrooms in the beginning of the next year.

The head of the Audi factory in Brussels also said that the A1 will be available at the beginning in the form of a three-door model while the Sportback version with five doors will arrive shortly after.

Audi previewed the new Audi A1 most recently with the concept Audi A1 Sportback which was shown last year in Paris, and before that with the 3D study 2007 Metroproject Quattro.

The production model Audi A1 will be similar to the two concepts, but do not expect to see details like the aggressively styled bumpers and the frameless doors. The concepts interior design will be almost certain toned down quite a bit.

Wider and longer than a Mini, Audi A1 (a premium supermini) will be offered to customers with quite a few 4-cilinder gasoline and diesel powertrains with direct injection. More than probably a few of these powertrains will be the 1.4 liter TSI and 1.2 liter Volkswagen Group petrol engines. It is said that Audi is considering a powerful S1 cabriolet with a soft-top with an engine that has an output of 200 HP.
