The Nurburgring Nordschleife is one of the most famous racing tracks in the world. It is a historical track that was built in the 1920s somewhere around the village and medieval castle of Nurburgring, that is located 70 kilometers south of Cologne and about 120 km northwest of Frankfurt. The Nuburgring is also known by car enthusiasts under the name ``The Ring`. The famous Formula 1 Scottish champion, Jackie Stewart, named the Nurburgring ``The Green Hell``. Jackie Stewart knew what he was saying, because the Nurburgring Nordschleife has the reputation of being one of the most dangerous and toughest race circuits in the world. The length of the entire Nurburgring is of 28 kilometers 265 meters but the Nurburgring Nordschleife, the most common section of the Nurburgring that is used for all the major competitions that take place on it, has a length of 22 kilometers 810 meters.
It is not a surprise that practically all the automakers try to do everything they can do get the fastest lap time at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. A while ago a real duel from the distance took place for the title of the fastest production car on the Nurbugring Nordschleife, between the Nissan GT-R and the Porsche 911. Now, the record for the fastest street legal race car has been broken by the famous Gumpert Apollo . The Gumpert Apollo has managed to complete one lap around the Nurburgring Nordschleife in the time of 7:11.57. This time is more than 10 seconds better than the one managed by the Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR. Gumpert Apollo was known as a really fast car but now it really proved that it is an extremely fast car. This performance is extremely important because there are a lot of extremely fast cars that have hit the market in the last couple of years that manage to achieve a huge maximum speed and look extremely fast. One great example is the Bugatti Veyron. The Veyron has a 1001 horsepower engine and a top speed in excess of 400 km/h. Thanks to this, the Bugatti Veyron is sold for over one million dollars, claiming that it is the fastest car in the world. I think that these sorts of cars are fooling people, because if a car manages to reach high speeds on a straight line that does not make it the fastest car in the world. A car can brag about being the fastest car in the world if it performs the best on a circuit, where you need to have a great handling, fabulous acceleration and other features like these. Going fastest in a straight line is irrelevant, managing to be the fastest on a hard circuit like the Nurburgring is much more relevant.
