2010 Opel Astra spied in Michigan

What we have here is a set of spy photos of the 2010 Opel Astra . The 2010 Opel Astra prototype was seen wearing heavy camouflage in a shopping mall parking lot in Traverse City, Michigan. The prototype had a General Motors Powertrain (GMPT) Engineering Vehicle sticker on the front windshield and manufacturer license plates.

This prototype has been spotted doing tests in the SUA, even though it will never be marketed there. This is a usual thing as new cars get tested in various places all around the world including markets where they will never be sold in. Still, General Motors is preparing a small Buick sedan based on the Opel Astra that is set to hit the North American market towards the end of the year 2011. Earlier this year, we saw on the internet a couple of spy photos sets showing a four door Buick sedan and a five door Astra prototype that had Buick`s corporate grille. At that point, General Motors went out in public stating that the five door Astra with Buick`s corporate grill was being developed for the Chinese market and would go on sale under the Buick brand. Still, General Motors might be taking into consideration launching the hatchback for the North American market where it could have serious competitors like the Mazda 3 and Volkswagen Golf.

We will just have to wait and see what happens, to see whether Buick will launch a rebadged version of the 2010 Opel Astra hatchback or not. I honestly think that the North American market is not prepared for an Opel Astra and that it would not see well at all in the USA.
