New spy photos of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The Frankfurt Auto Show that will take place next month will be the host of the world debut of the all new Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Gullwing. Still, Mercedes is busy working on a roofless version of the SLS AMG. Thus, the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Roadster prototype was spied in a series of photographs. From what we know until now, the SLS AMG Roadster will have an electric folding canvas roof. Still, the wealthy potential customers of this car will have to wait a long time, because the Roadster version of the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG will hit the market towards the end of 2011, no less than two years after the SLS AMG Gullwing will be launched.

From what we can see in the photos below, it seems that the SLS AMG Roadster will have normal door handles, thus the roadster version will not have the gullwing doors that will be used on the coupe SLS AMG. Still, nothing is official yet, as there also is the options that the roadster will come with doors similar to the ones used at the McLaren SLR roadster, that are a scissor type of doors. If we look at the rooftop and the rear deck, we can see that the general styling of the roadster will be the same as the coupe Mercedes Benz SLS AMG.

The engine used for the roadster will be the same one used in the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Gullwing coupe. To be more precise, I am talking about a front mounted V8 6.3 liter engine that has an output of 571 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. The power will be sent to the rear wheels (rear wheel drive) through a seven speed dual clutch transmission. Thus, the performances of the Roadster SLS AMG will be similar to the performance of the coupe version.

We do not have any final official figures, but according to the preliminary tests done by Mercedes, it seems that the SLS AMG Gullwing will be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds while managing to achieve a maximum speed of 315 km/h. Obviously, the Roadster model will be slightly slower, because of the increased weight necessary for the structural reinforcements.
