Toyota working on a sporty coupe hybrid based on Prius

There are a lot of rumors circulating around the internet these days. One of these rumors claims that the Japanese automaker Toyota is working on a Honda CR-Z rival. From what it seems, Toyota is developing a sporty hybrid coupe based on their Prius model. What we have here is an artist`s take on what the sporty hybrid Toyota might look like.

Still, do not take the below picture for granted, because it is just the opinion of a rendering artist and not an official teaser. The same rumors claim that the Japanese automaker Toyota is actually taking into consideration the idea of working with a very famous design company from Italy like Guigiaro`s Italdesign or the extremely famous Pininfarina, the creator of legendary Ferrari models.

If these rumors are really true and Toyota will actually launch a Prius based sporty hybrid coupe then it would be a direct rival for the Honda CR-Z hybrid coupe that will make its public debut in the final production form this fall in Japan at the Tokyo Auto Show. Also, the Honda CR-Z is expected to hit the market sometime in 2010.

The Toyota Prius is a really big car, but it actually is one of the most important Toyota models because it is one of the first hybrid cars to hit the market. It actually is not a great looking car but I do not think it actually really was intended to look good. If the Toyota sporty coupe hybrid will look close to the way it looks in the artist rendering below, then it would be a huge step forward for the Japanese automaker. A hybrid car that actually looks good would surely have a big impact on the market.
