Mini Coupe and Speedster production confirmed

During a visit at the Oxford Plant located in the United Kingdom, Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG, has announced that the yet to be seen (in real life) Mini Coupe Concept will enter series production and, more than this, the Mini Coupe will be built at Mini`s Oxford plant.

Lord Mandelson, business secretary, has stated that ``The production of the two new Mini models is very good news for Oxford, and for the UK car industry. British dirvers have had a long love affair with the Mini and I`m sure that this will continue for many years to come``.

The exact start dates of the production for the two new Mini models will be confirmed at a later date. It is also important to mention that these two new models will be added to the existing line of models that are built at the Oxford plant, including the Convertible, Hatch and Clubman.

Both the Mini Coupe and Speedster will be equipped with a JCW (John Cooper Works) powertrain that has an output of 211 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque. It is important to mention that when the overboost function is used, the JCW powertrain can have an output of 20 extra Nm, to a total of 280 Nm of torque. Rumors claim that it is possible that Mini is going to offer as an alternative the 1.6 liter 175 horsepower engine that is also used on the Mini Cooper S.

We will have to wait for just a week and a half more until the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show will open its gates. Until then, watch the pictures of the Mini Coupe Concept below.
