As you just found out some hours ago, Toyota was going to release details and a full photo gallery of their new sports coupe developed with Subaru before the end of this week. Well, seems like things went faster than we thought, as what we have here are the first official photos and details of the Japanese automaker`s latest creation. The car will be named Toyota FT-86 and from the looks of things, it is (almost) ready for production. As we previously informed you, the Toyota FT-86 will come off the assembly line towards the end of 2011. We are looking forward to seeing how successful will the 2+2 seats sports coupe co-developed with Subaru actually be.
In a press release published on its official website, Toyota has stated that ``The FT-86 Concept is neither an electric vehicle nor a hybrid vehicle, but is a sports modelwith a gasoline engine developed to convey the essential appeal of automobiles in a new era. It is a must see concept car that expresses Toyota Motor Company`s desire to once again create a Toyota sports car``.
Although initial official information are very few, it seems that the Toyota FT-86 will get its power from a naturally aspirated 2.0 liter four cylinder engine that has an output of 150 horsepower which is also used on the Subaru Impreza . The official details only confirm the fact that the Toyota FT-86 will get its power from a front mounted 2.0 liter four cylinder engine sourced from Subaru that will drive the rear wheels, but it does not confirm the fact that the engine is also used on the Subaru Impreza or the output of the engine. Other rumors claim that the 2.0 liter naturally aspirated four cylinder engine has been modified in order to produce 200 horsepower, but we can not confirm this, so just take it as a rumor for now. Some people will be hoping that the Toyota FT-86 will come with the 2.0 liter turbocharged engine capable of developing 250 horsepower used on the Subaru Impreza WRX , but I think that this is not possible.
The exterior design is clearly inspired from the Toyota FT-HS hybrid concept which was presented in Detroit back in 2007. Still, the finishing touches and implementation for the new Toyota FT-86 were done at the European Design Development ED2 studio located in Nice, France which is owned by Toyota.
The interior design is way too futuristic, a thing typical for a concept. Unfortunately we can not be sure that the 2011 Toyota FT-86 will have the same interior, so we will just have to wait to get closer to the launch date to see how things will look at the inside for the production version.
As we previously told you, Subaru will have its own version of the car, with the same mechanical parts but with a different design. Let`s just hope that the design team working for Subaru is just as inspired as the team that designed the Toyota FT-86.
