It seems that a new trend is developing. After the Nissan Land Glider prototype that will make its world debut during the 2009 edition of the Tokyo Auto Show, now the German automaker BMW revealed a weird concept, releasing along with the information and pictures a video too. The motorcycle like concept will be exhibited at the BMW Museum. The weird concept vehicle was created back in 2005 and is called SIMPLE, which is an abbreviation for ``A Sustainable and Innovative Mobility Product for Low Energy consumption``. I guess that ASIMPLEC would not have sounded that good, so they had to ignore some parts of the name.
The BMW SIMPLE concept has a weight of 450 kilograms and a width of 1100 millimeters. The German automaker claims that their concept mixes features and advantages from both automobiles and motorcycles. My suggestion is, if they are the point of combining advantages from vehicles, why not try to combine the advantages of the submarine, the car and the airplane? Well that might be one hell of a concept. Returning back to more serious things, the BMW SIMPLE can accommodate two passengers in a one plus one seat configuration. The car like cell handles like a motorcycle allowing the driver to lean into corners as desired but at the same time provides increased safety as well as protection from wind and bad weather.
The German automaker has stated that one of the most important features of the BMW SIMPLE is that the hydraulic are activated only in exceptional situations or extreme situations like drifting, if the vehicle threatens to become unstable during extremely slow driving or during standstill. Wait a minute, did I just read that right? Drifting? With this thing? Well I would pay to see such a dramatic show.
BMW did not release any details regarding the drivetrain, except that the BMW SIMPLE uses an electric motor and an internal combustion with an output of 48 horsepower. According to the German automaker, the three wheel thingamabob is able to reach speeds of over 200 km/h, has a drag coefficient of 0.18 and is able to go from standstill to 100 km/h in under ten seconds. Now seriously, who would that insane to drive this doohickey at over 200 km/h and is not suicidal?
Well, at least the fuel consumption is low. Hopefully that you do not get killed in this thing, you can go for 100 kilometers with just the equivalent of two liters of fuel (6kWh).
I am hoping that we will never ever get to see such a weird creation in production form. Ever!
