Citroen DS3 R3 rally car under development

Citroen decided to revive the DS line of models some time ago. Still, the official debut of the production ready version of the Citroen DS3 took place just one month ago during the 2009 edition of the Frankfurt Auto Show. Just one month after the production version of the Citroen DS3 was officially presented, it seems that the French automaker is already working for a rally version of the car. What you see in the pictures below is a prototype of the rally version of the Citroen DS3 during a session of dry tarmac testing. From what it seems, the rally version of the Citroen DS3 can currently be homologated for the Group R3 rally competition. In the pictures below we can see that the rally version of the Citroen DS3 has rally spec tires and alloy wheels, a full roll cage, boot and roof scoops. Obviously, the original interior of the Citroen DS3 was stripped in order to fit all the parts mentioned above.

For those of you who do not know, the Citroen Total World Rally Team was formed in 1989. Still, 2003 was the first full year for Citroen in the WRC (World Rally Championship). In 2003 Citroen won the Manufacturers` championship. The car they used was a WRC version of the Citroen Xsara. In 2004 Citroen won both the Manufacturers` championship and the Drivers` championship in the WRC. In 2005 Citroen again won both the Drivers` Championship and the Manufacturers` Championship, for a total of two Drivers` Championships and three Manufacturers` Championships won until 2005 inclusive. In 2006 the official Citroen Total World Rally Team took one year off to develop a new car, to replace the Citroen Xsara in the WRC. In 2007 Citroen came back to the WRC this time with a new car, a WRC version of the Citroen C4. In 2007 Citroen won the Drivers` Championship for the third time in history, but lost the Manufacturers` Championship, coming in second. In 2008 Citroen won both the Driver`s Championship and the Manufacturers` Championship. The 2009 WRC season is almost over, but with one race before the end of the season, Citroen has already won mathematically the Manufacturers` Championship while in the Drivers` Championship their driver is one point behind the Ford driver. Still, no matter what happens in the last race, we can say that in its entire existence, Citroen has won four Drivers` Championships and five Manufacturers` Championships.

Now, the question is obvious. Is Citroen already planning to replace the WRC version of the Citroen C4 with a WRC version of the Citroen DS3? We will just have to wait and see how things go.
