Futuristic concepts feel just at home at the 2009 edition of the Tokyo Auto Show. A great example is the Honda Skydeck concept that has made its world debut at the 41st edition of the Tokyo Auto Show. The styling of the Honda Skydeck uses a similar design language as the one seen on the Honda CR-Z Hybrid sports coupe that was also presented at the Tokyo Auto Show. It is quite clear that we will never see a car looking like the Honda Skydeck concept in production, but it might very well be the inspiration for a next generation Honda MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle). The Honda Skydeck is a hybrid minivan that has a pair of sliding doors at the back and Lamborghini style front doors. The Honda Skydeck is capable of accommodating up to six passengers.
The Honda Skydeck utilizes the center tunnel to accommodate key hybrid components, including the high power battery. This is something new, because until now Honda stored the battery of its production hybrid models under the boot or behind the rear seats. This is a very significant feature of the Honda Skydeck study, a feature that is also found on the Honda FCX Clarity which houses the fuel cell stack in the center tunnel to make the most of the space.
The Honda Skydeck will have greater cabin space and room for three rows of two seats as well as a lowered car center of gravity thanks to this particular packaging, which may be used by Honda on its next generation hybrid models.
This concept is very interesting, very futuristic and thus very unrealistic. At least for the times we currently live in. Anyway, take a look at the photos below.
