Speed Racer movie car replica shown at Tokyo

The economical and financial crisis has marked its presence at the 2009 edition of the Tokyo Auto Show by the fact that the vast majority of European automakers and practically all North American automakers missed out from the most important Asian event of the year. Still, the 41st edition of the Tokyo Auto Show had to take place, with or without foreign automakers, and space had to be filled somehow. That is why tucked away in a corner booth of the Makuhari Messe convention center visitors could find a cartoonish replica of the Mach 5 from the film adaptation of the popular 1960s Japanese manga series, Speed Racer. The replica is finished in sparkly white paint at the exterior while the interior got finished in red. The replica sure looked weird, cartoonish and did not draw too many visitors for that matter.

I am guessing that the reason why such weird things were on the display at the 2009 edition of the Tokyo Auto Show is the fact that excepting Lotus and Alpina , no other foreign automaker attended. I am betting that if at least half of the foreign automakers attended to the 41st edition of the Tokyo Auto Show, the organizers would not have been forced to display the replica of the Mach 5 from the Japanese cartoons Speed Racer. Hopefully until next year the financial and economical crisis will be gone and we will get to see more exciting concepts cars instead of cartoon car replicas. Anyway, since it is there, it does not hurt if you take a look at the photos below.
