4th of November 2009 Two decades ago people were conservatory, generally speaking. The auto business made no exception back in those days. Back in those days, the German automaker worked on a very courageous project for those days. More precisely, they developed a complete prototype of a BMW M5 E34 convertible version, which should have made its world debut during the 1989 edition of the Geneva Auto Show. Two decades ago the portfolio of the BMW M division was very conservatory, being completely different than how things stand today, when we have a large range of M models including SUVs like the BMW X6 -M or the BMW X5-M.
Unfortunately, fearing that the standard BMW 5-Series Convertible would be positioned too close to the thriving BMW 3-Series Convertible, the firm`s high ranking executives canceled the project at the last moment.
Now, 20 years later, BMW decided to show the car to the press at a special event for the 25th anniversary of the BMW M5. Even though pictures had circulated online (yes, internet existed back in those days too), the BMW M5 E34 Cabrio was kept under the covers.
The BMW M5 E34 was in production between 1988 and 1995. Until 1992 the BMW M5 E34 got its power from a 3.6 liter six cylinders engine capable of developing 315 horsepower at 6900 revs per minute and 360 Nm of torque at 4750 revs per minute. Starting from 1992 the BMW M5 E34 got its power from a 3.8 liter capable of developing 400 Nm of torque at 4750 revs per minute and 340 horsepower at 6900 revs per minute.
