I guess that the 25th anniversary of the BMW M5 was a good occasion for the German automaker to get all of its skeletons out of the closet. After we previously told you about the never launched 1989 BMW M5 E34 Cabriolet now we have another car that has almost the same life pattern. BMW revealed at a special event that took place in Germany for the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the BMW M5 a unique BMW M5 E39 Touring prototype.
The unique BMW M5 E39 Touring prototype received the same engine as the sedan version, more precisely a 4.9 liter naturally aspirated V8 capable of developing 400 horsepower. In comparison to the BMW M5 E39 Sedan, the Touring prototype never made it to production.
The BMW E34 M5 Touring that got its power from a six inline cylinder engine was the only other production M5 touring model with the exception of the current BMW M5 E61 Touring that get a V10 engine.
The BMW E39 was a very successful platform used for the BMW 5-Series that was built between 1995 up until 2004. The BMW E39 platform was replaced in 2004 by the current BMW E60 platform, after replacing the BMW E34 back in 1995. In its lifespan of nine years no less than 1.533.123 BMW 5-Series vehicles were built on the BMW E39 platform.
The BMW M5 E39 was produced between 1998 and 2003. In the five years of existence, 20.482 vehicles got sold worldwide. The reason for which a Touring version of the BMW M5 E39 never came of the production line is a financial one, as the German automaker considered it would not be a smart move at that time.
