7th of November 2009 Ford announced the 1st-ever production in the industry of inflatable seat belts, that are some kind of a mix between airbags and seat belts (traditional). Meaning that they would get raised rear-seat occupants' protection, including more vulnerable (to head, neck and chest injuries) passengers and children.
Sue Cischke, the group vice president of Ford Sustainability, Environmental, Safety Engineering said 'Ford’s rear inflatable seat belt technology will enhance safety for rear-seat passengers of all ages, especially for young children who are more vulnerable in crashes. This is another unique family technology that builds on our safety leadership, including the most top safety ratings of any automaker'.
The new made technology is created for deploying over a torso and shoulder of the passenger in forty milliseconds approximately if a crash occurs, says Ford's official data.
Paul Mascarenas, the vice president of Ford, Engineering, Global Product Development affirmed 'Ford is pioneering inflatable seat belt technology to help enhance crash safety protection, while encouraging more people to buckle up with a more comfortable belt'.
Like the traditional airbag, this brand new technology starts once their sensors on the vehicle determine the collision's severity. The belts are inflated hating cold compressed gas, that flows via a buckle, below the seat, from a cylinder.
Srini Sundararajan, the leader of safety technical for research and advance Ford engineering, said 'It’s a very simple and logical system, but it required extensive trial and error and testing over several years to prove out the technology and ensure precise reliable performance in a crash situation'.
