Dakar Rally has as its 'official supplier' - Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles; Amarok, its all-new pickup unit will be for the rally - the Support Vehicle. The organizer will be using twenty Amarok, having a further fifteen to be used like press and shuttle cars. The autos will beat all the challenges, showing its off-road talents.
Volkswagen Motorsport Director, Kris Nissen explains 'We are pleased to be able to use the Volkswagen Amarok as our Support Vehicle, because the Dakar Rally demands the highest levels of technical perfection, reliability and endurance – from our Race Touareg as much as from the support vehicles. The Amarok is exactly the right vehicle for our team'.
Stephan Schaller, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles' CEO adds 'The Volkswagen Amarok is Volkswagen’s answer to the pickup and on the Dakar Rally – one of the last great adventures for mankind – it will have the chance to show what it’s made of and to demonstrate its flexibility and durability'.
Schaller states 'Moreover, the Volkswagen Amarok is built in Argentina and South America is one of the most important markets for this product, so taking part in the 2010 Dakar Rally was an absolute must for us'.
Besides Amarok, Volkswagen will send to Dakar other cars as well. Volkswagen Motorsport will have four teams on the Rally. Next year, on January, from first to 17th, the rally begins and ends up in Buenos Aires. Amarok, after the Dakar Rally debut, the model will be introduced initially on the markets of South American, followed by the European zone. VW enters into a new territory now.
