18th of November 2009 Superformance is a small American automobile that designs, builds and imports sports cars and replicas. Superformance is mostly known for some interesting replicas they made, including replicas of the Ford GT40, the Shelby Cobra or the Shelby Daytona Coupe. Superformance was founded in 1996. Currently, Superformance has 6 international dealers and 15 USA dealers. Now, the small American company has revealed their latest project, which is, obviously, another replica.
The latest replica done by Superformance is a 1963 Chevrolet Grand Sport. This is not just your everyday kit car, as the replica done by Superformance is a licensed replica of the original model. The 1963 Chevrolet Grand Sport was one of the most wanted circuit cars made by GM in history.
The 1963 Chevrolet Grand Sport was the secret brain child of renowned Corvette engineer, Zora Arkus-Duntov. In the early 1960s, Zora Arkus-Duntov wanted to develop a race car built just for this sole purpose in order to win the Sebring and Le Mans races. Duntov and his Chevrolet staff went on and built a total of five specially engineered prototype racers based on the 1963 Corvette. Unfortunately, GM executives never approved the program and the production of the 125 street legal cars that were required for racing class homologation were never built. Still, the five prototypes that were already built made their way on the race tracks without GM`s official endorsement during the 1960s in the hands of private racer with strong contacts within Duntov`s engineering circle. Currently, the five cars still exist and are considered as being some of the most valuable vehicles in the collector market. I am wondering how much would one of those five cars cost a passionate car collector.
The Superformance 1963 Corvette Grand Sport replica is practically a clone of the original racer excluding the original transmission and engine. This is possible thanks to the fact that Superformance got its hands on the original blue prints and molds from the number 2 Grand Sport that had been transformed into a roadster by Chevrolet before the project was canceled.
Unlike the original prototypes, the Superformance 1963 Corvette Grand Sport replica can be ordered to be completely street legal. The Superformance 1963 Corvette Grand Sport replica will be available in both coupe and roadster versions and can be fitted with any crate engine that is currently available in GM`s Performance Parts division offer.
Unfortunately, Superformance did not disclose any pricing details. Still, they did mention that the first completed street version replica will hit the market towards the middle of the next year.
