The first generation of the Volkswagen Golf was one of the most successful cars in history that practically opened a very successful path for one historic model. The first generation Volkswagen Golf was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and hit the market in 1978. The last plant where the first generation of the Volkswagen Golf is still in production is the Uitenhage facility owned by Volkswagen located in South Africa. Still, every legend has its end so the German automaker decided it was time to end the production of the first generation of the Volkswagen Golf in South Africa. This comes after 31 years of production and five new generations of the Volkswagen Golf later. In the 31 years of activity, no less than 517.384 units of the first generation Volkswagen Golf were produced at the Uitenhage facility in South Africa.
The last run of 1000 first generation Volkswagen Golf units to ever be produced in the entire world will represent a limited edition destined to say goodbye to a legendary car. The limited edition first generation Volkswagen Golf will be named Volkswagen Citi Mk1 and will have some very interesting features, including chrome grille surround, a choice of two colors (Black and Shadow Blue metallic), twin headlamps, 15 inch gunmetal painted alloy wheels, chrome tail pipe, dark taillights and GT style stripes under the doors.
Moving towards the inside, potential clients will get to see an individual number embossed on the dashboard, a different and more modern cockpit design, specific floor mats, sports seats partially covered in leather, red stitching throughout the interior, a retrotastic golf ball gear knob and a leather steering wheel.
All the units of the limited edition first generation Volkswagen Golf will get their power from a 1.6 liter engine capable of developing 99 horsepower at 5400 revs per minute. The limited edition first generation Volkswagen Golf will have a price of 15.500 dollars or the equivalent of 10.300 euro and will be available exclusively in South Africa.
