Over 300 million dollars to be invested in Detroit factory for Chevrolet Volt production

The Chevrolet Volt is the car that is expected to bring General Motors back on track, in a period of harsh economical crisis, when the governments of most countries have agreed to save the auto industry but with the condition that those automakers to invest a large amount of the bailout money for the development of cars that are more fuel efficient. Thus, the Detroit – Hamtramck plant will be the final assembly location for the Chevrolet Volt, using the equipment from Grand Blanc, lithium ion batteries from the Brownstown Township battery pack manufacturing facility owned by General Motors, camshafts and connecting rods from Bay City and stamping and the 1.4 liter engine generator from Flint. Now, General Motors has announced that they will invest 336 million dollars in its Detroit - Hamtramck factory to produce the electric Chevrolet Volt next year, bringing the combined investment in eight different facilities in Michigan for the production of the Chevrolet Volt to a grand total of 700 million dollars.

Jon Lauckner, General Motors vice president of global product planning, has stated that ``We expected the Detroit – Hamtramck plant will be the first facility in the U.S. owned by a major automaker to produce an electric car. It is the hub for the wheel that we began rolling in 2007 when the Volt debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit``.

Certain equipment for the Chevrolet Volt production is being reused from other General Motors facilities and installed in the Detroit – Hamtramck plant`s body shop while the car itself will be built on the existing assembly line at Detroit – Hamtramck, in order to reduce cost and maximize flexible manufacturing techniques.

Mass production is scheduled to start towards the end of the next year, while the assembling of the Chevrolet Volt prototype models will start in the spring of the next year.
