Even though the new BMW 335is Coupe and Convertible will make its world debut at the 2010 New York International Auto Show in April, the North American division of the German automaker decided to release official details and photos of the new model. The BMW 335is gets its power from a detuned version of the N54 3.0 liter twin turbocharged straight six cylinder engine capable of developing 340 horsepower. The exact same engine is used on the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is. It is also important to mention that the BMW 335is is based on the facelifted BMW 3-Series (both coupe and convertible versions).
For those of you who forgot, the old N54 engine that was an inline six cylinder twin turbo engine capable of developing 300 horsepower with the new N55 that is a single turbo six cylinder engine capable of developing 300 horsepower for the new 2011 BMW 335i . Through the use of temporary overboost, the N54 engine used in the BMW 335is is able to have an output of 501 Nm of torque instead of the regular 450 Nm of torque and 320 horsepower.
The BMW 335is will be able to reach an electronically limited maximum speed of 150 mph or 241 km/h. The BMW 335is will be offered optionally with a seven speed DCT (Double Clutch Transmission) with Launch Control instead of the standard six speed manual transmission, being the first BMW 3-Series model that will have this feature. The BMW 335is Coupe equipped with the seven speed DCT will be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds while when equipped with the standard six speed manual gearbox, the coupe will be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. When it comes to the convertible version of the BMW 335is, the acceleration speed remains unchanged, no matter which transmission is used. Thus, the BMW 335is will be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds.
Other technical improvements of the BMW 335is include a new sport exhaust system, an additional radiator behind the left side front air intake, stiffer engine mounts as well as a more powerful electric cooling fan.
The interior and exterior features of the BMW 335is include a ``335is`` badge on the passenger side dashboard, M Style bumpers, dark grey instrument cluster dials with a ``335is`` badge on the tachometer, an integrated rear diffuser, standard 18 inch light alloy wheels in ferric grey color, new kidney grille surrounds in high gloss black, wing mirror caps in high gloss black as well as Shadownline black window trim.
The BMW 335is Convertible will have a base price of 59.075 U.S. dollars while the Coupe version will have a base price of 50.225 U.S. dollars. It is important to mention that at the beginning the new BMW 335is Convertible and Coupe will only be available in Canada and the United States of America.
