8th of February 2010 After being on the brink of bankruptcy and closing its gates, General Motors has been working side by side with NASA at a very interesting project. More precisely, GM along with NASA have created a couple of robots named Robonaut 2. Their task? To perform tasks which are too dangerous for humans.
Alan Taub, vice president for global research and development of General Motors , has stated ``this is about safer cars and safer plants. When it comes to future vehicles, the advancements in controls, sensors and vision technology can be used to develop advanced vehicle safety systems. The partnership`s vision is to explore advanced robots working together in harmony with people, building better, higher quality vehicles in a safer, more competitive manufacturing environment``.
Doug Cooke, associate administrator for the Exploration System Mission Directorate, has stated ``This cutting-edge robotics technology holds great promise, not only for NASA, but also for the nation. I`m very excited about the new opportunities for human and robotic exploration these versatile robots provide across a wide range of applications``.
The robots have been equipped with dexterous hands which allow them to grab objects like a human would, in order to maximize their capabilities.
This is a very interesting project and it is nice to see companies investing in the technologies of the future. Still, you can not help asking how General Motors can afford to invest in robots when they can barely avoid bankruptcy.
Anyway, you can watch a video of the NASA and GM co-developed Robonaut 2 here
