ford, Ford, SuperSport, Hatchbacks, Geneva Motor Show, Ford Focus RS / ST version for global markets confirmed
2nd of March 2010
A high performance version of the new Ford Focus that will get its power from a version of the four cylinders EcoBoost engine family, featuring both turbocharging and direct injection that will be offered in all markets has been confirmed to be under development by the North American automaker during a pre-show event in Geneva.
Currently, the range of four cylinders EcoBoost engines made by Ford consists of a 2.0 liter engine that has an output of a little over 200 horsepower as well as a 1.6 liter unit that has output of 150 horsepower and 180 horsepower. Currently, for the European market, the Ford Focus ST gets its power from a 2.5 liter tubocharged inline five cylinders that has an output of 225 horsepower. The same engine, only with an output of 305 horsepower is used for the Ford Focus RS. If you put all the facts together, it is quite possible that the new high performance Ford Focus will get its power form a 2.0 liter EcoBoost engine that will be upgraded to have an output of over 250 horsepower.
The North American automaker did not disclose what will be the nametag used for the new high performance Ford Focus (RS, ST, something different?), but they did confirm that the new model will hit the market sometime in the next two years.
Derrick Kuzak, vice president of Product development of the Ford Group, has stated ``We want to reassure enthusiasts of Focus performance models that we have a plan for them as well``. He continued by saying ``Our commitment is to deliver an exciting performance model of the new Ford Focus on a global basis and using a version of our advanced new Ford EcoBoost petrol direct injection turbo engine. We are not ready to reveal more details yet, but we recognize how important this model will be in the Focus line-up, particularly for customers in Europe``.
