The Mercedes Benz S-Class is surely one of the best if not the best limousines in the world. In the current generation Mercedes Benz S-Class lineup we can find only one hybrid version, the Mercedes Benz S400 Hybrid which gets its power from a 3.5 liter V6 petrol engine that has an output of 279 horsepower along with a 20 horsepower electric motor installed in the torque converter housing between the seven speed automatic transmission and the engine. The Mercedes Benz S400 Hybrid can not be driven on electricity alone but features a set of lithium ion batteries.
In order to meet tightening European carbon dioxide emission regulations and tougher corporate average fuel economy standards in the United States, Mercedes Benz is seriously considering of having a completely hybrid lineup for the next generation of the luxurious Mercedes S-Class. There is only one problem with this idea. The U.S. dealerships of Mercedes are against this.
Tommy Baker, chairman of the Mercedes Benz dealer board and a Mercedes dealer of Charleston, has stated "The most important thing in the American market - regardless of hybrid, lithium or electric cars - is that we Americans are different than any market and we are going to want those gasoline engines. For S-class buyers the goal is not gas mileage."
To be honest, he has a point. If you have the money to buy a state of the art limousine, you would expect to get a great gasoline engine. Obviously, you are rich enough to want the best things when buying a car and a hybrid powertrain seems more like a compromise.
The decision will be taken by the executive board of Mercedes Benz in three months time. The next generation Mercedes Benz S-Class will hit the European market in 2012 and the North American market in 2013.
