Kia has officially announced the engine options that will be available in Europe for potential buyers of their new Kia Optima model. As you probably remember, the Kia Optima made its world debut last week at the 2010 New York International Auto Show.
The new Kia Optima sedan will be available with a choice of either a six speed manual gearbox or a six speed automatic transmission featuring Kia’s Sport-matic clutchless manual shifting or fully automatic operation. In terms of engines things get a little more interesting.
The interesting part is that the 2.4 liter four cylinders engine with direct injection that has an output of 203 horsepower and the 2.0 liter turbocharged engine that has an output of 278 horsepower that are offered in the United States will not be coming to Europe.
Anyway, in Western Europe, the new front wheel drive Kia Optima will be available with a choice of either a 1.7 liter VGT turbo diesel engine or a 2.0 liter CVVL gasoline engine. At a later date the South Korean automaker will offer performance and output numbers for these engines.
The Eastern European and Russian markets will also get the option of a 2.4 liter MPI petrol engine capable of developing 178 horsepower.
The new Kia Optima will hit the European market in the spring of 2011, while North American buyers will be able to get their hands on the new mid-size sedan starting this autumn. The new Kia Optima will have serious competition, including the Citroen C5 or the Ford Mondeo.
