Fiat 500 four-door coming to the United States

Fiat will offer a four-door version of the 500 subcompact in North America. The four-door version of the Fiat 500 will arrive in Europe at the end of 2011 but timing for the United States is still uncertain.

Later this week, Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler and Fiat, and other executives will outline Fiat's 5-year plan in Turin, Italy. The plans for a four-door 500 may or may not be announced, sources say, but it has been approved.

Code-named L0, the vehicle would be classified as a small minivan in Europe because it has a hatch in the rear and a high roof.

Fiat is said to build the 4-door 500 at its Turin Mirafiori plant, on a longer and wider platform than the two-door model's.

The four-door version will be the fourth addition to the Fiat 500 lineup in the U.S., after the two-door (2010), the convertible version (2011) and the performance version, that will be marketed under the Abarth brand.

Chrysler may be preparing a new 2013-model year subcompact sedan for North America. That car would be built at a Fiat factory in Kragujevac, Serbia.
