Volkswagen will be calling the new Indian market Polo sedan model the Vento. The name Vento, which means 'wind' in both Italian and Portuguese is slated to go on sale as early as July this year.
The new Vento shares the same platform as the recently launched Polo but with wheelbase which has been lengthened by 50mm to liberate more interior room. The front fascia is slightly different with a different grille and head lights to differenciate it from the its hatchback cousin.
The Vento will initially get two engine options – a petrol and a diesel. The petrol option will be the 1.6 litre engine, from the older Jetta which has been suitably modified with dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) and a 4 valve head, delivering 105 bhp of maximum power and 15.8 kgm of maximum torque.
The diesel would be a brand new 1.6 litre unit which comes from the same engine family as the 1.2 turbo-diesel that powers the Polo and the bigger 2-litre diesel under the hood of the Jetta, rated at 105 bhp of maximum power, but 25.5 kgm of turning force.
Both will be fitted with a 5-speed manual transmission.
India will be one of the most important market for the Vento and VW is hoping to sell 25,000 units every year once the production starts in full swing.
