Tesla to announce where the Model S will be built

Within the next few weeks, Tesla Motors Inc. will announce which plant it has chosen to produce its electric vehicles.

Tesla will hire 50 to 60 people a month, particularly specialists in vehicle engineering and production.

Tesla’s first mass production plant is expected to be on the West Coast where it will assemble both the Model S and the next-generation Roadster sports car. Tesla is planning to convert a factory for this purpose, but the deal hasn't been finalized. "It hasn't yet been finalized," CEO Elon Musk said. "We've almost fully negotiated the deal, but it has not been signed yet."

Tesla has "a fairly significant team" put together for manufacturing. It has recruited people who have worked with BMW AG, Land Rover and Toyota Motor Corp.

"We're really trying to put together a world-class manufacturing team," Musk said. "We're trying to create a Spartan army of expertise."

The West Coast plant will include stamping, paint shop, body and chassis, and doors.
