Volkswagen succeeded in returning to its place as the top-selling brand in the European Union in April.
After Ford brand outsold Volkswagen brand by 1,298 units in March, Volkswagen has reclaimed the lead for April while Ford has slipped to just fourth.
VW has once again become the best-selling automotive brand in the European Union with sales of 138,304 units, a 7.7 percent decline, while Ford's sales fell nearly 20 percent to 87,721 units. Renault and Peugeot placed second and third respectively with 99,642 and 88,721 units.
The reason for the drastic swing in Volkswagen’s favor is due to two main reasons, the first being the success of VW’s current Golf model. The second major contributing factor is that many vehicle scrappage incentives, which favored sub-compacts like the Ford Fiesta and Ka, have now run their course.
The new numbers also put the Golf ahead of the Fiesta in total European sales, becoming Europe's best-selling car, with 186,202 units moved so far this year, as compared to 173,096 for the Fiesta. In the first quarter, the Ford Fiesta was almost 4,000 units ahead of the Golf with Fiesta sales up 22 percent to 140,877 units while the Golf was up 13.1 percent to 136,900.
Just to remember, the Golf was Europe's best selling model five times in the past decade (2000, 2001, 2004, 2008 and 2009).
