It appears that a decision regarding the return of the legendary Opel Calibra has been taken and the German manufacturer will build a new coupe based on the GTC concept car revealed in 2007 but it might be developed using Insignia's platform. It's likely to share cues with the original Insignia concept car, 2007's rakish GTC showster.

The new car will be in fact a coupe version of the Insignia and is expected to receive the same engine, meaning a 2.8-liter V6 Turbo ECOTEC powerplant capable to deliver an impressive 325 hp.

The project is known in house as "New Calibra", borrowing its name from a coupe Opel built from 1989-1997. The Calibra was the most aerodynamic car in the world at the time of introduction, with a drag coefficient of 0.26 cd.

The New Calibra is expected in early 2013 and would share its underpinnings with the Insignia but Vauxhall and Opel need to build about 30,000 units a year before the program starts making money.

"We would feel a lot more confident about some of these projects if Buick, Chevrolet in North and South America and Saab were sharing volumes and risk", a source told CAR Magazine.

Before Opel can really get into the new product, the General Motors brand has some bigger issues to resolve. GM's European division is currently awaiting a $1.89 billion loan from the German government to help keep the company afloat.
