Lotus to cease production of the Europe this year

Lotus' production of the Europa, the Elise-based coupe, will end later this year, after only four years. Sales below expectations since the Europa's launch in 2006 unfortunately mean that the Europa’s cancellation should come as no surprise.

Sources say that European dealers have already stopped taking orders for the Elise-based coupe. Production will wind down within the next few months to complete the few orders that remain.

The Europe was introduced to help fill in a gap in the market place prior to the introduction of the Evora. It was launched in 2006 and it was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that could deliver about 200hp 2.0 liter powerplant with 270Nm of torque. Three variants were offered, including the S and SE, which received a boost in output to 220hp and an equal amount of torque in early 2008. It can sprint up to 96 km/h (60 mph) in around 5.5 seconds, and 100 mph in around 14 seconds, while reaching a top speed of approximately 140 mph.

Dealers can now concentrate on the Evora which was launched last year and looks like a recipe for success.
