Felipe Massa extends contract to 2012

Despite earlier rumors to the contrary, Ferrari has ended speculation about Felipe Massa's future by announcing on Wednesday that Felipe Massa has extended his contract with the Maranello-based outfit until the end of 2012.

Massa's deal was due to expire at the end of the year. After his indifferent start to the campaign, there were some rumors that Ferrari could be looking to replace the Brazilian after five seasons in favor of Robert Kubica or Mark Webber.

Felipe has been with the Scuderia since 2001. To date, he has competed in 69 Grands Prix for the team: he has taken eleven wins, 30 podium placings, 51 points finishes, fifteen pole positions and twelve fastest race laps, scoring a total of 360 championship points.

Robert Kubica has been linked with the team for some months, but the news means that there won’t be an opening for the Pole or anyone else for some time to come. The other driver recently linked with Massa's seat, Mark Webber, has re-signed with Red Bull Racing for 2011.

"I am happy to be given the opportunity to drive for Ferrari for a further two seasons," said Felipe.

Ferrari usually announces driver decisions late in the season, but this time there has been an effort to provide Massa with a comfort zone after a difficult start to the season.

Team boss Stefano Domenicali said: "Felipe has been part of Ferrari for almost a decade and together with us, he has grown as a driver and as a man, going through some very difficult times as well as giving us moments of great happiness."
