Saab and BMW in talks to build new 9-2

In order to expand its model line quickly, Saab is looking for new partners. Saab Automobile is in discussions with BMW regarding a possible cooperation to develop a new small car the Swedish automaker wants to build.

The two companies are discussing sharing parts and technology for the upcoming Saab 92 mini car. BMW would provide Saab with engines, transmissions and the MINI platform. But nothing is sure, because the negotiations are private and an agreement will take at least two months, one of them said.

A meeting is scheduled to take place at the end of June, reports said.

"Discussions are already ongoing," Muller told Bloomberg News on June 11. "That will be on my plate for the next 100 days."

Spyker declined to comment and BMW said it would not comment specifically on the report.

"We are in talks with several interested parties who have interest in our technology," a BMW spokesman said. "There are no contracts with Saab at the moment."

The parts and platform would be used to build a tear-drop shaped car, inspired by the Saab 92 model that was in production between 1949 and 1956. It is expected to be about 10 percent bigger than the MINI.

New Saab owner Spyker expects to sell at least 30,000 units per year when it comes to market between 2012 and 2014.

Saab and BMW executives didn’t comment on the possible tie-up. At least, Muller revealed that an announcement would be made within the next three months.
